This is 50’s

Fight IT!

I was talking to a male friend of mine and started having a hot flash and lost all focus. He said “Hot Flash, Menopause?” At first I was offended, then he continued, “Yeah I am going through it too, that’s right, don’t think for a second men don’t go through it with you!” I thought to myself….Bless, he is so correct.

*Warning – this blog is for the women in my life… men, you can kindly skip all the TMI unless you want to better understand the women in your life. : )

It all started on my 50th birthday with a missed period.  UGH. Then it was 2 months, then 3, and 4.  Then guess what? The worst period of my life.  Yep, I had been so lucky my whole life with easy periods, on time, light with mild symptoms like simple cramps, maybe mad (hating everyone) for 3 days or sad (crying at commercials) for 3 days.  Now I am having 4 days of the worst cramps ever, heavy flow, snot crying, sad and mad at the same time.  After that, my period was all over the place, once every 3 months then 2 in a month.  Good times.

Crap, now what?  My gynecologist and PA told me that I would need to wait until I didn’t have my period for one year before it is officially diagnosed as Menopause.  So, I asked Google.

Menopause definition and symptoms:

“Menopause is the time that marks the end of your menstrual cycles. It’s diagnosed after you’ve gone 12 months without a menstrual period. Menopause can happen in your 40s or 50s, but the average age is 51 in the United States.”

“Menopause is a natural biological process. But the physical symptoms, such as hot flashes, and emotional symptoms of menopause may disrupt your sleep, lower your energy or affect emotional health. There are many effective treatments available, from lifestyle adjustments to hormone therapy.”

-Well that was helpful.

The next 2 years have been riddled with hot flashes, sleepless nights, emotional roller coasters, weight gain and just pissed off in general.  Everyone my age was telling me all the horror stories and all the things they tried. No one tells us how to age, how to handle loss, aging parents, children going off to college, divorce after 25 years, dating in your 50s, aches, pains and holy shit balls…Menopause!

So guess what? I decided to “F IT”…(my mom is reading this, so the ‘F’ is FIGHT) but you get me.

Stay tuned…the fight continues
